Dr Marshall Chin, MD, MPH, Dr Elbert Huang, MD, MPH, Dr Monica Peek, MD, MPH and Dr Satendra Singh, MD discuss COVID-19 and the macro effects this virus has on social and health disparities. Dr Chin covers how the US has addressed the pandemic, the success and challenges faced, and generalises these facts on a global scale. Dr Huang addresses the ways in which how COVID-19 has impacted the elderly population. Talking beyond the vulnerable, Dr Peek touches on the marginalised, specifically on African-American disparities in the States, and how this global pandemic has further exposed such issues. Dr Singh dives into the effects on a third group, the disabled, exploring health and disparity amongst this group of people. The four speakers subsequently engage in a panel discussion, discussing various topics including the US’s surprising ineptness in coping with the virus, optimal methods for the restructuring of patient care facilities and healthcare systems, and the mental and psychological effects caused by the pandemic, to name but a few.
