This conference convenes faculty, medical residents, and students from the University of Chicago (UC), the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM), and other institutions to examine the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on normative ethical clinical practices in medicine. AI systems are being deployed at high rates across healthcare, and increasingly directly influencing clinical decision-making. Through research talks and case studies, this conference will address how AI integration is reshaping culturally distinct ethical clinical norms and decision-making within Hong Kong, China, and the United States. Sessions will address changes in patient autonomy, family authority, and clinician responsibility, as well as AI as a potential moral agent, the complexities of informed consent in new digital paradigms, and challenges in prognostication and truth-telling. This conference builds on past conferences and long-standing established collaborations in clinical ethics between UC, the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, HKU, CUHK, and HKAM. The conference is intended to foster cross-cultural dialogue and generate actionable recommendations regarding AI in medicine to equip clinicians and healthcare leaders navigating the evolving ethical landscape of clinical care.
