Description:

With its long and variegated history, the phenomena of K-12 private schooling continues to be a contentious one. Among questions around other normative goals attached to schooling, the debate often pits the pursuit of equity against the provision of choice.  Contextualizing this debate in a larger comparative review of debates and experience of private schooling in Asia, Professor Ankur Sarin (UChicago PhD’04 Public Policy)  will take a grounded approach to examine the experience of a provision in India that mandates almost all private schools to admit at least 25% of children in their entry level class from economically weaker and socially disadvantaged populations; a mandate that is often also labelled as the largest school voucher program. The talk draws from experiences of engaging with the policy as an “action research project” as well as more conventional forms of research.

Nexus Asia is a program initiated by the UChicago Hong Kong Campus dedicated to collaborating with UChicago PhD alumni and their institutions throughout the Asia Pacific region. In addition to facilitating research, Nexus Asia plans to engage its alumni on its UChicago Hong Kong campus with workshops, lectures and events for academics and the general public.
