Robot-based Rehabilitation for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism is a diverse neurodevelopmental condition. A primary issue they have is engagement with others, stemming from their impairments in social and communication skills. Engaging with individuals can be difficult due to the diminished social desire associated with autism and heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli.

In this presentation, Professor Catherine So (UChicago PhD’07 Psychology) will elucidate the application of technology, emphasizing socially assisted robots, and will examine and debate the research demonstrating the efficacy and limitations of these robots in aiding individuals with autism. She will provide the empirical evidence supporting the robotic intervention, termed Robot for Autism for Behavioral Intervention (RABI®), developed by her and her team. She will also elucidate how RABI has generated societal effect in Hong Kong.

Nexus Asia is a program initiated by the UChicago Hong Kong Campus dedicated to collaborating with UChicago PhD alumni and their institutions throughout the Asia Pacific region. In addition to facilitating research, Nexus Asia plans to engage its alumni on its UChicago Hong Kong campus with workshops, lectures and events for academics and the general public.
