Description:

The University of Chicago Hong Kong Campus will launch the two-day symposium Sonic Border Passages in the Making of Chinese Modernity with an opening performance and reception on December 15 at 6:30 pm. Bringing together scholars, musicians, and filmmakers, the symposium explores how sound moves across borders—historical, political, and geographical—to shape Chinese modernity and Hong Kong’s unique position as a global borderland city.

The evening features TROVESSIONAL 伍人粵, a young Cantonese music ensemble whose playful yet refined approach to tradition resonates with the symposium’s themes of encounter and transformation. They will create an intimate, acoustic soundscape that resonates with Hong Kong’s unique role as a cosmopolitan borderland city. Guests are invited to stay for a post-concert reception.

Musicians:
Jessica Kai-sze FUNG (Dizi and Xiao)
Chun-yin SIU (Yangqin)
Justin Bai-shen NG (Ruan)
