Description:

Since 2016, the Institute for Humanities and East Asian Research (IHER) at Dankook University has led efforts to integrate digital technologies into the study of classical Sinographic (Literary Sinitic) texts. Supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea, IHER develops AI-based tools to transform traditional literary works into structured, accessible digital knowledge—reshaping how Korea’s two-millennia tradition of Sinographic scholarship is preserved, interpreted, and taught.

This conference, hosted by Dr. David Hogue (UChicago PhD’23 East Asian Languages and Civilizations) at the University of Chicago’s Hong Kong Campus, will feature IHER researchers presenting their latest digital tools and placing them in the wider history of Sinographic literature in Korea. It will also bring together scholars from Hong Kong, East Asia, and beyond to explore digital approaches to studying texts from both Sinophonic (e.g., China) and non-Sinophonic (e.g., Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Ryukyu) traditions. By linking historical scholarship with technological innovation, the event aims to foster cross-regional collaboration and chart new directions for humanities research in the digital era.

Nexus Asia is a program initiated by the UChicago Hong Kong Campus dedicated to collaborating with UChicago PhD alumni and their institutions throughout the Asia Pacific region. In addition to facilitating research, Nexus Asia plans to engage its alumni on its UChicago Hong Kong campus with workshops, lectures and events for academics and the general public.
