Socializing Medicine: Health Humanities and East Asian Media is a cutting-edge volume co-edited by three University of Chicago alumni: Pao-chen Tang (UChicago PhD’20 Cinema and Media Studies and East Asian Languages and Civilizations), Yuqian Yan (UChicago PhD’19 Cinema and Media Studies), and Ling Zhang (UChicago PhD’16 Cinema and Media Studies). Published by Hong Kong University Press in 2025, this interdisciplinary work offers a timely exploration of mass media as powerful tools for disseminating medical knowledge and shaping public health discourse. The book examines how media portrayals of health are deeply intertwined with broader societal dynamics, including imperialism, Cold War geopolitics, and neoliberal capitalism, while advocating for more accessible and equitable health practices. Engaging with urgent global health issues, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Socializing Medicine is an essential resource for scholars and practitioners in media studies, health humanities, and global health.
The launch event will bring together the three co-editors, contributors to the volume, and prominent health humanities scholars based in Hong Kong and Guangzhou for a dynamic discussion on the critical intersections between media, health, and society.
Nexus Asia is a program initiated by the UChicago Hong Kong Campus dedicated to collaborating with UChicago PhD alumni and their institutions throughout the Asia Pacific region. In addition to facilitating research, Nexus Asia plans to engage its alumni on its UChicago Hong Kong campus with workshops, lectures and events for academics and the general public.
