Description:

The University of Chicago has played a pivotal role in shaping modern social sciences, serving as home to a variety of influential “Chicago schools” since the early 20th century. While much scholarship has examined their theories and methods, less attention has been paid to the role of education in their formation.

This panel discussion, Education in the Formation of the Chicago Schools, hosted by Professor Wang Liping (UChicago PhD’13 Sociology), highlights how distinctive educational practices—from College curriculum reforms to unique departmental training approaches—nurtured scholarly cultures that sustained and advanced these schools of thought.

Building on past initiatives such as The Chicago Tradition of Social Sciences lecture series, this program is part of the broader Chicago Schools in Asia project, connecting academics interested in the global influence of Chicago’s social sciences. It will foster dialogue among scholars and alumni, exploring how educational experiences have shaped both research trajectories and the enduring legacy of the Chicago tradition.

Nexus Asia is a program initiated by the UChicago Hong Kong Campus dedicated to collaborating with UChicago PhD alumni and their institutions throughout the Asia Pacific region. In addition to facilitating research, Nexus Asia plans to engage its alumni on its UChicago Hong Kong campus with workshops, lectures and events for academics and the general public.
