The Mysteries of Sanxingdui: Reflections on the Hong Kong Palace Museum Exhibition

When:
Tuesday, November 28, 2023 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Where:

UChicago Yuen Campus in Hong Kong
168 Victoria Road, Mount Davis
Hong Kong

Description:

Archaeological excavations at Sanxingdui in Guanghan, Sichuan province, have revealed evidence of an ancient culture in the upper Yangtze River valley and in particular the Chengdu Plain. But what can we learn from Sanxingdui in terms of societal hierarchies and power dynamics, human values, and artistic and religious beliefs with a culture that left no evidence of communication or language?

Reflecting on the intriguing exhibition of the new archaeological discoveries at Sanxingdui by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the University of Chicago campus in Hong Kong has invited a panel of experts, including Dr. Wang Shengyu from the Hong Kong Palace Museum, Professor Li Kin Sum from Hong Kong Baptist University, and Professor Peng Peng from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The experts will share their learnings from the Sanxingdui discoveries and discuss the cultural and historical significance of Sanxingdui in a program moderated by the University of Chicago Professor Edward Shaughnessy.

Join us on Tuesday, November 28, at 6pm at the UChicago Hong Kong Campus or via Zoom to explore the mysteries of Sanxingdui and learn our latest understanding about these ancient cultures.
