Description:

The University of Chicago campus in Hong Kong is pleased to announce a Ph.D. Student & Post Doctoral Scholar Travel Grant program for 2024-2025. The University of Chicago Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars planning field or archival research that would benefit from a residence in Hong Kong are invited to apply for short-term research funding. Periods of residence may vary from a few weeks to several months, but must be completed before June 30, 2025. Awardees will be issued up to a US$ 4,000 stipend to assist with travel and other related expenses. Office space will be provided at the UChicago Hong Kong Campus, and awardees are encouraged to spend time there.

The research conducted by the Ph.D. student or postdoctoral scholar need not focus on Hong Kong, but the applicant should explain why it would be beneficial for the project to spend time in that city. Ph.D. students should be in the dissertation stage or expected to enter this stage no later than the end of Spring Quarter 2024. Preference will be given to projects that will build connections with people and/or institutions in the East or Southeast Asian region, and especially with Hong Kong-based scholars.

Interested students and postdocs should write to UChicago’s Hong Kong team at hk@uchicago.edu with up to a 1,000-word summary of the following items:

  • Purpose of the funding request
  • Research topic addressed and methodology
  • Use of funding
  • Name of your principal faculty advisor
  • Name of the partner institution, if applicable
  • Estimate of the period of time you expect to be working in Hong Kong
  • Budget (template)

Each application must include a brief statement from the faculty advisor explaining their oversight of the research and, if applicable, how the research conducted during this trip will further advance their research and its importance. For postdoctoral scholars’ applications only, the faculty advisor should also certify the following:

  • The individual applying for this award is eligible to receive this funding, and if, prior to the disbursement of funds, the individual is no longer eligible to receive this funding, s/he will inform UChicago’s Hong Kong team at hk@uchicago.edu immediately.
  • The postdoctoral scholar’s unit will process the payment/reimbursement of this funding upon receipt of the funds transfer from UChicago Global.

Following completion of their travel, awardees are required to provide a 250-500 word summary, focusing on how the travel grant furthered their research.

Applications are due April 1, 2024, with results shared by early May.
