Description:

The once-widespread belief that successful economic development would be accompanied everywhere by convergence towards a similar set of institutions – in particular, an apolitical, technocratic, and government bureaucracy with a significant role in economic management – lies in tatters, and few things have done more to shred that belief than China’s spectacular economic development of the last 40 years. But scholars who insist instead on the distinctive nature of China’s path to modernity differ sharply on what makes it distinctive, with two of the most popular models being almost diametrically opposed. Amidst increasing doubt about whether any society has a path to sustainable prosperity, this lecture looks at some of the distinctive institutions underlying Chinese growth, and asks to what extent they may be useful (or harmful) in efforts to make modern prosperity compatible with environmental viability.
