Unruly Spirits: The Rise of Chinese Medicine Therapies for Autism and ADHD

Awareness of autism and ADHD has spread rapidly in greater China over the past decade. As anxious parents seek to address their children’s perceived academic and social deficits, clinicians are integrating Chinese medicine into novel treatments. These therapies raise critical issues, including how psychiatric concepts are changing perceptions of parenting and childhood in China; how state policies and market forces are shaping Chinese medicine; and the role of integrated therapies in evidence-based practice, a question that is especially morally fraught in the context of pediatric care.

In this talk, Professor Amir Hampel (UChicago PhD’17 Comparative Human Development) will examine these issues by presenting research with public health professionals, with clinicians developing Chinese medicine therapies, and on social media discourses about the use of Chinese medicine for autism and ADHD.

Nexus Asia is a program initiated by the UChicago Hong Kong Campus dedicated to collaborating with UChicago PhD alumni and their institutions throughout the Asia Pacific region. In addition to facilitating research, Nexus Asia plans to engage its alumni on its UChicago Hong Kong campus with workshops, lectures and events for academics and the general public.
