As video games have gained a global reach, their genres have multiplied. In China, many players prefer mobile games, including casual, strategy, chess, poker and gambling games, and role-playing genres. In Japan, more players are often drawn to console-based and anime-related games, including role-playing games, visual novels, and dating sims. In South Korea, we have seen a significant uptake of eSports, Massively Multiplayer Online Games, and PC Bang culture. Meanwhile, with its diverse culture and a young population, Southeast Asia, including India, are seeing a growth in local game development. Overall, video games are a massive cultural form in Asia, with plenty of room for continued growth across all ages, genders and areas of interest.
What do video games genres look like across Asia? What do game designers think of when creating video games in this region? Do video games developed in Asia appeal to gamers across the globe?
The third episode of the Video Games mini-series delves into the different genres of video games popular in Asia from the perspectives of both independent game designers and game studies scholars.
