The Webs Beneath the Tracks: Digging Up the History of the Hong Kong Tramways

When:
Thursday, February 1, 2024 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Where:

UChicago Yuen Campus in Hong Kong
168 Victoria Road, Mount Davis
Hong Kong

Description:

The story of Hong Kong’s trams is, of course, about transportation: but it is also about investors, workers, sustainability, marketing, real estate, tourism, strikes, boycotts… and even housing and schools. The people involved were part of networks that connected them to Guangzhou and London, but also to surprising places like Calcutta, Harbin, and Cape Town. So how does all of that become a single exhibition? Join the UChicago campus in Hong Kong Faculty Director, Kenneth Pomeranz, for a lecture and discussion about the making of Hong Kong’s iconic tram system, and about the research that lets us tell the trams’ local and global stories.
