This past spring, Hong Kong’s first full-scale Art Basel since 2019 demonstrated the city’s ability to rejoin the global arts stage.  International attendees returned to the city in full force and proved it may be possible for Hong Kong’s “art desert” to continue to blossom into Asia’s art capital.

As Chairman of Hong Kong’s M+ Museum, Board Vice Chairman of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, and former Chairman of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, Bernard Chan strongly believes Hong Kong is Asia’s main artery for arts and culture where East meets West.  However, to build on Hong Kong’s dominant arts role in the region and globally, the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ will need to continue developing its arts and culture ecosystem if it wants to equal the city’s reputation as Asia’s top financial center.

Bernard Chan wears many hats and is leading that charge. From his role in business and non-profits, to politics and even his own artistic practice, Bernard keeps a hectic schedule organizing many of Hong Kong’s post-COVID recovery efforts.
