The University of Chicago Hong Kong, the only free-standing, self-funded and degree-granting American university operating in Hong Kong, announced today it has launched Nexus Asia, a program dedicated to collaborating with UChicago PhD alumni and their institutions throughout the Asia Pacific region.
Nexus Asia currently includes an expanding community of over one hundred PhD alumni across forty-four Asian universities representing all of UChicago’s schools, departments and disciplines. In addition to the leading universities in Hong Kong, Nexus alumni include faculty at many of Asia’s most prominent institutions including Peking University, National University of Singapore, Seoul National University and Sophia University.
“Nexus will expand UChicago’s practices of open inquiry, deep analytical rigor and interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing significant questions facing the Asia Pacific region and the world,” stated Professor Kenneth Pomeranz, University Professor of Modern Chinese History and the College, and Faculty Director of the University of Chicago Hong Kong campus. “In addition we expect the program to accelerate its engagement with other universities in the Asia Pacific Region through our PhD alumni in the program.”
In addition to facilitating research, Nexus Asia plans to engage its alumni on its UChicago Hong Kong campus with workshops, lectures and events for academics and the general public.
Nexus Asia began its launch with a call for research proposals from the Nexus alumni network last month. Nine Nexus alumni projects have been funded across a variety of institutions in Hong Kong, Mainland China, South Korea, Singapore, and India including the projects across a variety of disciplines.
